Jam in the box

The countdown to puppies is on and today it was time to set up the whelping box.  This is a special box where Jam will whelp her pups and they will live for the first four weeks of their lives.  We bought this Durawhelp brand whelping box a few years ago and are quite happy with how easy it is to clean, critical for the pups, and stores flat when not in use.  There are pig rails, those white bars around the inside perimeter of the box, that keep the pups safe in case the dam rolls into them or pushes them against the side of the box.

We set the box up a week or two before the due date to give Jam a chance to acclimate to the box as she will be spending a lot of time in it with her pups.  As the pups grow, we will insert the door to prevent them from escaping.   The quilt in the box is temporary and just for Jam's comfort.  For the actual whelping, we will use disposable pads and after that, the pups will have a very plush fleece pad to enjoy.

Next on the list, setting up all the supplies for the whelping, the heat lamp and thermometer for the box and reviewing all the whelping books.

Trixie - our Newest Therapy Dog!!!

I am very proud to announce that Trixie is our newest Pet Partners Therapy Dog!  With Jam out on maternity leave and Savi away for field training, we needed to find a Weim to fill their shoes and  it was Trixie.  The group home for developmentally disabled adults has missed our visits and I'm sure will be thrilled to have us back.
Thanks to our wonderful evaluator, Anita Sacks, who organized and administered the Pet Partners, formally Delta Society, Therapy Dog evaluation in New York City.  Trixie adored Anita!
Even with torrential rains and a tornado nearby, we made it safely into the city and were able to get  the evaluation done, and make it out to the Somerset Hills Kennel Club show to purchase dog food and puppy toys for Jam's litter!
It takes a group of trained volunteers to assist with making the evaluation a success and our fabulous friend, KellyAnn, joined us for the day to help.  The other volunteers were terrific and thanks go out to them for donating their time.

Mia at the Greenville shows in July
Huge thanks and congratulations to Steve & Bonnie Lane for handling Mia, Grayhart's American Woman, (Parker x Trixie) to her first show wins!  Mia was Winner's Bitch at the Newton Kennel Club show on Friday and again at the Schooley's Mountain Kennel Club show on Sunday. She now has two points toward her AKC championship title.
The winning streak continued as Mia's sire, Parker, BISS GCH HiBourne's It's All About Me, handled by Steve Lane, owner/breeder, went Best of Breed three days in a row and under the talented hands of Carissa Shimpano, went Group 4 at the Saturday show!
